Kamakura and Ofuna: Where Should Solo Travelers Stay?
Compare the Kamakura Station and Ofuna Station areas for transport, sightseeing and solo-friendly hotel choices.
Quick answer
Choose around Kamakura Station if your trip is centered on temples, shrines and the coast, or around Ofuna Station (one stop away) if you'd like a wider choice of hotels and easier transfers toward Enoshima.
Kamakura Station area
This area puts Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Komachi-dori and Wakamiya-oji within walking distance. The JR Yokosuka and Shonan-Shinjuku lines, plus the Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden), make it easy to reach Kamakura Kokomae or Hase. It's about an hour from Tokyo Station by the Yokosuka Line, so a day trip is possible, but staying overnight lets you visit temples before the daytime crowds arrive. As a sightseeing town, the overall number of hotel rooms is more limited than around Ofuna Station.
Hotel candidates for solo travelers around Kamakura Station
- Hotel Metropolitan Kamakura: About two minutes on foot from JR Kamakura Station's East Exit. There's no dedicated single room, but the double rooms (designed for one or two guests) can be booked for solo use. Café&Meal MUJI is on site. A good fit if being close to the station matters most.

Ofuna Station area
Ofuna is one stop from Kamakura Station (a few minutes on the JR Yokosuka or Shonan-Shinjuku lines), and the Shonan Monorail also connects it toward Enoshima. It has more business-hotel choices and a wider price range than around Kamakura Station itself, with restaurants and a supermarket clustered near the station. Reaching sights like Tsurugaoka Hachimangu still requires a short train or bus ride.
Hotel candidates for solo travelers around Ofuna Station
- Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kamakura Ofuna Higashiguchi: About two minutes on foot from JR Ofuna Station's East Exit, and also about two minutes from the Shonan Monorail Ofuna Station gate. Mainly compact double rooms, plus connecting-room options. A Japanese-and-Western buffet breakfast is served, and the location works well as a base for exploring Kamakura and Enoshima solo.

Before choosing
- Travel time from your arrival point (Tokyo Station, Shinjuku Station, Haneda Airport, and so on)
- How you'll reach the temples or coastline you want to visit (on foot, Enoden, or bus)
- Whether the streets feel well-lit and populated if you're walking alone at night
- Restaurants or convenience stores open early morning or late at night
Frequently asked questions
Should I stay in Kamakura or Ofuna?
If you plan to walk between temples and Komachi-dori, Kamakura Station itself is more convenient. If you'd like a wider choice of hotels, or plan to continue toward Enoshima, Ofuna Station — also a transfer hub — is worth considering.
Is staying overnight worth it instead of a day trip from Tokyo?
Kamakura is close enough for a day trip, but staying overnight gives you time to visit temples early in the morning or in the quieter evening hours, and to catch sunset views around Enoshima without rushing back.
